sony_dvd_hard_disk_recorder recently bought but it will not format any RW disks either - or + - any ideas?

It was bought new from Amazon. Works perfectly with TDK-R's. Using Sony disks so thought they'd be ok. As it works with the once-only's thought we might be doing something wrong. But as soon as you put the new disk in, it tries to format and then fails.

either the disc you have aren't compactiable with the sony machine, or the dvd lens cleaner needs to be done ( if brought second hand ). But my advice take it back to the shop, and let the experts sort it out for you, free of charge.

Will it record DVD-R? I ask, because if it will, then the laser and lens should be alright. If not, then it looks like the machine has gone faulty and needs to be returned

Are you using a well-known make of disk? I recently bought a cheaper brand and lots of them failed to even format in my Panasonic. Even with a good make, you could just have got a bad batch.

You say it won't format -RW or +RW though? So presumably you are using more than one brand or batch. If it was a bad batch, then it would be likely one of those formats would work!

To rule out the disks. Have you used the disks on a computer before? Only some computer programs have made some of mine unformattable.

If it won't format even new disk and you are following the manual correctly, or are trying to format disks in the way they used to format, than this too points to a faulty machine.

You can try cleaning the lens, but some manuals say you shouldn't try that. I suppose it depends whether the machine is still under guarantee or not? If it is, probably best to just take it back, so you don't invalidate the guarantee and let them worry about it!
