how do you properly and safely disconnect a simple circuit? What are the procedures in order not to damage a cell/battery and not shock yourself? Thanks.

make sure that there is no amperes running throught the device, so before disconnecting the apparatus should be swithced of.
If you dont do that you might be ther spectator of an explosion, that can be fun but there are better ways to make an expolkosion
so dont i say , and make sure tyou have a fire assurance before disconnetcing the batteries, especially the lithium polymere are dabgerous stuff.

Unless the voltage is larger than 9 volts or you're using your tongue, batteries are unlikely to shock you. Most battery operated devices can't be hurt by removal of the battery.
