Interesting question.

Most references to this subject were on cooking sites. That makes sense since flaming spirits is a popular technique in cooking. Anyway, the following site has a reference that indicates that the minimum alcohol content required to burn is 30%

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with proof actually. While bartending, I made a plethora of fire shot for bachelorette parties and such, and I know that 151, Sambuca, and Everclear go up pretty nicley. On the other hand, i've had some other overproof rums, strong russian vodkas, and brandies not light at all. I've also been to culinary school, where I saw some brandies and Grand Marnier go up for desserts and sauces quite easily too. If you want a sweet fire shot, by the way, try this:

1 1/4 oz Ameretto
Float Bacardi 151
Light the shot, and drop it into 1/2 pint of miller light, then drink the whole thing down in one fell swoop. It should taste exactly like Dr. Pepper! It was a big hit at parties. Enjoy!

It would have to be at least 40 to 50 percent alcohol (80 to 100 proof) for it to burn. For flambe's (like cherries jubilee), a stronger spirit is used, like brandy.

The temperature of the spirit also makes a big difference. The alcohol won't ignite until it's had a chance to warm up, which increases it's vapor pressure (and makes it more flammable).

Not sure, but i dont think its just the alcohol content.
Sambuca is about 40% and sets alight very easily, Ive tried with some very strong russia vodka about 65% wouldnt light at all...
(i love sambuca btw - hence name!)

Wow - sounds like a night out with you would be a riot! Although I'm not sure I'd be too impressed if you set my SoCo on fire. I only drink doubles btw and it's your round.

Not sure, but I know Bacardi 151 can be set on fire easily. Actually so can brandy, whiskey, and Grand Marnier. Whatever those proofs are.

I don't think every alcholic drink will burn. I've never heard of bear burning! But spirits (such as whisky or brandy) burn quite easily and they are usually around 40%.

Yeh i don't think its all about the volume of alcohol because brandy burns easily but whiskey also 40% doesn't burn at all

Depends on the temperature
