I am a 15 year old freshmen and am very overweight (not obese). However, I don't want to continue life like this and would like to become a little more fit. However, I have tried this once and I counldn't lose a single pound (actually I did, but in two months I lost 5 pounds...not fast enough) I think I may have an extremely low metabolism, is there any pills that target teen metabolism? Plus, I don't have access to a gym. What do I do? I am tired of this crap! I weigh 195 pounds and am 5 ft 10 inches. I have a beer belly (not from drinking beer). I need help. Give it up.

Join a sports team at or after school.

Don't get in the habit of quick fixes, such as pills. They do more harm than good.

When I was 13, I was overweight (sz 14) and it was something that was part of my body's growth.I am now a size 6. I did at that time take up exercise and through a change in my eating and exercise, did change my weight. But every body's body/chemical dynamic is different. If you feel comfortable, and there is someone available, talk to a nutritionist at school. Speak with someone you trust. Get more than one person's thoughts. Don't think in terms of "fast" weight loss, because fast usually means it will come back. How long did it take for the weight to come on? Be patient. 10 years ago I lost 40 lbs and it took 6 months and I was running 5 miles a day! If you are looking to be more fit, excellent...remember that muscle weighs 2 times as much as fat so you might have lost 5 pounds in two months, but there was a change in your body from fat to muscle. The hardest thing I think we all face as humans is that we know what we want to look like and not really understand what our body should look like and be healthy. Do not give up...keep active and your body will get to a place where it should be. Oh and by the way while you are dieting and getting fit, you will hit plateaus. I did after 4 week when I changed my eating and started running again. That lasted for a month! But I keep going and my weight started to drop again after 8 weeks. And about the gym, I run, lift freeweights at home, cycle, kayak...a gym is not the only place a person can get fit. Good luck.

5 pounds in two months is actually a pretty good rate of weight loss. Don't let shows like The Biggest Loser mislead you into thinking anything else.

To lose a pound of weight, the key number is 3500 calories. That's the amount you either need to burn through additional exercise (above and beyond what you normally do), or you need to cut out from your diet -- or some mix of the 2. In excercise terms, to loose a pound per week, you can jog for an hour 5-7 times per week (depending on your weight), or in food terms, you can cut out the equivalent of 11 snickers bars per week.

This should give you a sense of just how difficult it is to lose more than 1 pound per week.

And don't get into pills for weight loss -- the last thing you want to do is mess with metabolism. Go back to what you were doing before that allowed you to lose ~1 lb per week. FYI, studies have shown that people who take longer to drop the weight have a better time keeping it off.

Good luck with your weight loss

Take the time to look over this-- lots of different things to use.
Nourish your body thin, instead of starving your body fat. Good carbs like celery and carrots will never make you fat. Bad carbs like cake will, but you don't need to know the whole science of glycemic load. You need to re-learn how to eat so you can become thin and healthy. Salt has no calories but makes you fat and burning more calories does not help this fatness.

5 pounds in two months is acctually the best way to go. seriously.
if you try to loose weight too quickly then you have a bigger percent change of gaining it all back! But if you looser weight at a nice slow pace, then you are most likely not to gian it back.
Think about it. Say you have been trying to loose weight for a whole year as quick as you possibly can, but you dont end us loosing any at all right? what you could have done in a year if you had pacience would have been a great accomplishment. in you loose weight slowly within a year, you could loose up to 30 pounds!
I've notived a few guys in my school do that once they got to high school. Thery used to be a little chubby, but after just once year of paced weight loss, they look amazing.

At 15 you are still developing and your brain will not stop developing until you are 22. The key to weight management at this age is not radical dieting and pills which are detrimental at any age but particularly risky at your age. Go to this web site: http://www.mypyramid.gov/ - you enter your age and weight and it provided you food advice and exercise advice that are healthy - effective and a good Life Style as opposed to a "diet" . Your goal should be to develop a style of eating that nourishes and develops your body without damaging your organs or brain. There is evidence to prove that depriving a developing youth of specific nutrients and fats can cause sever weight issues as well as emotional and memory problems. A healthy life style is by far the best way to manage weight for life as opposed to a quick fix pill/diet product that is dooming you to a life of weight battles.

It sounds like to me that you need to get on a good exercise routine. I would start with walking or jogging and if you have a treadmill, dust it off and use it. You have to get your cardio pace up high enough to burn off some of the fat and calories. This coupled with proper foods will get you started. See if you can find more help here.
