Can someone define and explain the phenomenonof active transport?

I have read up on it but I guess I need it in simpler terms.

Active transport is a process where some source of energy (often ATP) is used to concentrate a molecule inside or outside of a cell. There has to be a protein molecule in the membrane that binds the compound on one side of the membrane, and then uses energy to move the molecule to the other side of the membrane.
