E numbers are codes for food additives and are usually found on food labels throughout the European Union. The numbering scheme follows that of the International Numbering System (INS) as determined by the Codex Alimentarius committee. Only a subset of the INS additives are approved for use in the European Union, giving rise to the 'E' prefix.

E is for food additives, some food additives are good some are bad for you, some of the food additives have only been introduced in the latter part of this century there have been many debates about weather they should be allowed at all, many claim certain additives may cause certain health conditions such as allergies, migraines, hyperactivity in children and several adverse reactions.
