Microwave Leak Detector
http://www.tomsgadgets.com/products/details.aspx?pc=MW001-7
This device is designed to enable you to indicate leakage of microwave radiation from the door, hinges, rubber seals and screens on microwave ovens. This low cost device will only indicate if there is a leak by the light being illuminated. It is unable to display the intensity or danger level of any leak which is detected.

This is a great low cost tool.

Microwave radiation passes through and can damage living tissue.

The main problem is around the door and hing. The detector is a good indicator of possible problems. The main thing is your eyes. If u get a good radiation u would be blind. So when it is on stay away from it,and don't let the children get very closet. One of the best checks is to check how long it takes to heat a cup of coffee . If u keep increasing the time to get it hot it is getting weaker. DON'T TRY TO GO IN TO WHERE THE ELECTRONICS ARE. There are high voltage capacitors there that can hold a charge for a long time, and could kill u.

I would say every 5-8 years or so, dont wait until it breaks because the metal that reflects the radiation may have been damaged and you let radiation into your body increasing risk of cancer so i would say pretty regularly just to be safe

When it stops working. There is no particular part which has a time-related failure mechanism. When one quits, replace it; they are so inexpensive that it is uneconomical to repair them. (My last one cost $40 at Wal-Mart.)
