If your dog had a lump which went away then it was probably just a cyst. If a lump needs to be removed, ask the vet to send it for analysis and this will tell you if it was cancerous, if it was malignant and if it's likely to recur.

If there are any more lumps, take your dog to the vet again, and make a point to mention that the dog's brother (if what I'm gathering is correct, it is the dog's brother) also had a lump that proved cancerous.

You may want to take him even without waiting for a lump to appear, because some bumps are internal, and cannot be seen outside the body.

Some of these lumps turn out to be benign cancers.
That is, remove them, end of problem.
Your dog's problem could have simple been cause by a Tick which dogs can easily be pick up out of the grass.
These things just gorge themselves on blood like a leach then fall off
If you find one attached to your dog, they look like a small maggot, don't attempt to pull it off.(their head will remain under your dogs skin and cause an infection) Smother them in Vasaline and leave them for a while this smothers them to death, then it should come away easily
