I need specific information in California about a sex offender, such as when it happened and other info like that. Megan's Law website has basic information. I need to find out more.

That's the problem with the California Megan's List. It does not specify anything, other than the basic penal code violation. There are proposals in the works now to include the year in which the offense occured and when they were released from prison. That way the public would know if the offense occurred 30 years ago or a year ago. There is also a bill to provide a risk assessment. Right now, everyone is classified as having the same risk - a ridiculous and idiotic proposition. And since the media and politicians tend to grandstand on this issue, the public assumes all registered sex offenders are repeat child molesters. Patently false!

In California, there are 107 different offenses that can get one listed on the list. And since California has been requiring convicted sex offenders to register since 1947, it has captured a lot of people, many of whom are dangerous and many of whom are not.

You can go to the court house where the conviction was filed and look at the criminal record.

It sounds like you are worried about this person, but please don't let the public hysteria over "registered sex offenders" to cause you to over-react. It may be that you are worried about someone you really do need to worry about, or you may be worrying about nothing.

That is why the California Megan's List is misleading. It scares the public but doesn't give the public the needed information to make the necessary precautions to steer clear of the real bad guys. Instead, it paints everyone as a bad guy!

Good luck!

This is not a matter of just asking and recieving information per the "Open Records Act" . Pertinent info such as what you seek is only available to Law Enforcement Agencies, and to aquire this without the express consent of the offender is a violation of the privacy act in it's amendment of 1994. Megans Law is only for information as to whether or not you have a sex-offender in you neighborhood and his/her block #. You must have a valid reason for the request but you can ask a Judge to let you view the files "IF" you have a valid and legitimate reason.

Beyond the information covered there? Sorry, even convicted sex offenders have some rights to privacy.

Try that website.

In Illinois we have a sex offender website and it gives their, full name, address, what county the charges were from, their picture, and it also states about what age the victim was.
