It's a tough question to answer. I am the president of a youth soccer organization. Most of what I do as a volunteer is for kids and adults I have never, and will never, meet. It takes quite a few hours per month to keep it all going. That said, I'm not sure it's quite what you were asking.

Sometimes when I am driving down the road, I'll see someone stranded on the side with a flat tire, or no gas. I rarely stop for them. I have somewhere to be almost all the time. (Four kids, job, soccer, ...) I wish I could, but I don't. I do stop at accidents if I am the first on the scene and check to see if anyone is hurt. But, that's about it.

Heh... we're here, aren't we?

For people whom I have never known I have done a great deal, and many of those strangers became much more to me. In the end, everyone is a stranger until you get to know them. Some strangers stay strangers, and some strangers you marry and make more strangers with.

To be more direct, I would do great things for someone I've never met... so long as none of the strangers I've met before have to pay the price of my generosity with me.

Help them when their lives are in danger as long as there is no back lash or harm brings to me. I usually help a stranger when there are lots of people around to witness, just in case the stranger turns his/her back on me and sue me for any type of benefit that he/she might think can get out of me. It's like getting stabbed on the back by your dagger. It's a sad world but we all have to be cautious even when saving others' lives.

I would not give a stranger a ride home or give them a free money for bus pass or anything like that.

Its according to the situation, what is the stranger wanting from you? If it is intimacy then he or she should not be a stranger when your contact with them goes there. Strangers can be very dangerous. The most dangerous ones are usually very good at seeming really nice. So be cautious.
