To travel between any countries, a passport is needed.

Passports are required to enter/exit any country, with the exception of some trips to Canada and Mexico from the US. As of just recently, you now have to have a passport if you fly in and out of the US from even Canada, Mexico, and travel to other places such as the Carribbean, Bahamas, etc.

Even if not required, the best idea is to get a passport anyway. If nothing else, it will help speed your trip through Customs.

As of Jan 2007 it is required that all US citizens traveling abroad carry a current US passport. Birth Certificates, Green Cards, etc will no longer be viable for re-entry. You can go to http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html for information about obtaining a passport. It usually takes around 6 weeks, or 2 weeks if you pay to have it expedited. Hope that helps.
