The reigning champ for intelligence is a 12 year old Border Collie named Rico. Rico lives in Germany and has a documented vocabulary of over 200 words.

You can read an article about this dog and it's ability to learn new words at the rate of a toddler at: http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2004/06/10/dog_learn040610.html

Other published studies rank:
#1 Border Collie
#2 Poodle
#3 German Sheppard

All the northern breeds (Siberians, Malamutes, Samoyeds, etc...) are amazingly smart. They just won't work for you like a dumb Lab or Golden, they will only work WITH you. They are also often too smart for their own good, and figure out ways to get into trouble. My samoyed will pick up a new command in only a couple repetitions, but she quickly gets bored with repetitive obedience training. Google some of the feats of lead sled dogs on explorations, you'll be amazed at how smart they are!!!!

I'm a little biased, so I'm going to say Golden Retrievers!! But in general, working breeds are going to be really smart: Labs, German Sheperds, Goldens, Border Collies, etc.

My mutt... according to standarized tests he is in the top 5 percent of all dogs intelligence and trainability wise. He aced every test in under 5 seconds.. hes sometimes to smart for his own good. He can learn a trick with only one repetition, his memory is excellent and he can solve complex problems with ease. I say mutts are the smartest because I am proud of my mutt... he is part german shepherd, and some kind of husky mixed with who knows what else.

Well, according to the AKC, the Border Collie is the smartest dog breed in the world.

But I BEG to differ, my Dachshund is pretty smart himself.

I think border collie since they are always the ones who win Agility and Frisbee contest, right? Look how they obey commands for herding sheep plus solving problems on there own. They are a thinking dog.

I cannot believe someone put labs-every one that I have seen has been a mongoloid dog-anyway border collies are extremely intelligent, and golden retrievers are as well--both are very loyal dogs, too.

German Shepards are very smart. Personally I think its how you raise them. You can have a Lab thats smart and then another that has no idea what a bone is.
