Either tell them not to send you a new one or don't activate the new one when you get it.

I cut up a Victoria's Secret credit card after I paid it off. They are still increasing my limit, and it shows very favorably on my credit report, with a 0 balance.

They'll send you a new card with a new expiration date about 2 weeks before your old one expires. If they don't, call them and ask. All the credit cards I've ever seen want to keep working with you forever.

If you don't want it...close it
it will be one less account to remember to cancel if your cards are stolen
Some card companies will charge you for an inactive account to get your attention.
