This is usually told as the 3 men going to a motel and getting a room for $30, and the price is later reduced to $25.

The trick is that you're counting some of the money twice, and some of it is not being counted at all. The $9 that each boy paid (totalling $27) ALREADY INCLUDES the $2 that the helper kept, along with the $25 in the cash register. ($25 + $2 = $27)

If you want to get back to the $30 total, you need to take in to account the $3 that the boys got back! So in this riddle, the $2 that the helper kept is being counted twice, and the $3 the boys got back is not being counted at all.

It doesn't matter that 3x9=27+2=29. The guy still has 2. He just needs to divide that by 3. Were not trying to make 30. We are trying to get down to 25. So all he has to do is divide the extra 5 by 3. He should have give each person 1.67. Had he done that, each boy would then have spent 8.33. 8.33x3=24.99. The penny is lost because 5 divided by 3 is 1.6666666666. If this happened in real life I would question the competence of the shopkeeper lol.

it comes down to the most simple rule of all..... the math is wrong... remember in school when ur teacher taught you that multiplication and division comes first then addition and subtraction....

well on this question, the wording is a bit off so the math will look correct but is actually wrong...

you cant add, then subtract, then multiply, then add....

ex.

3+4*3=(right anwser)15
3+4*3=(the wording of the question above makes it) 7*3 which would equals 21

the dollar didnt go anywhere...... it has been distrubited out correctly... in total, the men ended up with losing 27 dollars, 25 for the clock, 2 to the boy. and three dollar they recieved back.
