Have you ever had a borderline or manic-depressive parent? My mother has BPD and my dad has bipolar.. I can not even begin to explain the terrors of my childhood because of this. The problem is, my mother refuses to accept that she has BPD and it makes it close to impossible to deal with her at times. I try hard to contain my feelings, but sometimes I'll snap and get into a verbal fight with her. When this happens, she'll literally threaten to commit suicide. How can I deal with this? My parents are divorced and extremely bitter towards each other, so I can't talk to them about the other person's actions. My father actually takes his medication and is a lot easier to deal with, but there are still those times when I seriously want to strangle someone. If you have any helpful advice on how I can live through this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am a Buddhist. It is a nice gesture, but please refrain from trying to convert me to your religion or giving me spiritual answers.

Oh, boy, you've had it tough so far and thank God you seem very bright and intelligent and you're getting through it. Try to stay strong and maybe speak with other family members about it if you are so lucky. Just know that it isn't your fault. I am a mother and I suffer from severe depression and try my hardest not to have these moments in front of my children, but unfortunately I haven't been successful in every attempt. What you should remember is that it's not your fault and your mom just doesn't accept her illness and although she is not thinking clearly when she mentions suicide, this is very unhealthy to do in front of you. Remind her of everything she would lose if she attempted to do something like that. It's not your job to be the parent at this point in your life and this is an unfair situation for you. You feel like you can't live with this anymore and you shouldn't have to. Find outside help to convince your mother to get the help she needs. God will be on your side.

Go to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) web site. You can join your local chapter, and there are lots of groups for family members of the mentally ill. You will find a lot of support and understanding there, and you will realize that there are many people who have had the same problems you have. I understand your frustration. You need real, on-going support from people who have experienced what you have. Seriously, give it a look and see what you think. Good luck to you.

The only way i have learned is to take the whole thing at one day at a time and dont listen to everything that the person tells you because there is alot of stuff said that is only ment to hurt you. Take it easy and just help and make it to the next day. Good luck

As a Buddhist your best tools are your meditation practice and compassion for them but also for yourself. It may be necessary for you to separate yourself from them, particularly your mother.

I highly recommend seeing a counselor yourself. Your upbringing has probably screwed with you in ways you don't even know.
If it's possible to move in with a friend or relative, it might be a consideration.

How might you live through this?
If you believe and accepted Jesus as the Christ, I ask you to pray to Him. If you do not doubt, He will act upon your faith.

I will pray for you and your parents, but I desire that you trust in Him and believe that He will redeem them from their situation if you trust in HIm.
He is able.
