He is only 13 and what he wants could change in a heartbeat. Little boys get enamored with guns, war and such. But I could see where it would be usefull to have him working toward a goal.

Here's my point. There are millions of guys who can carry a weapon and join the Marines. The Seals and various units in the other services feel the same. The key is education! The ability to understand history, cultures and why people are having conflicts. Learning another language early is key as well because once you learn one it is easier to learn others. Being a bookworm in order to become a warrior may sound counterintuitive to your son.

It's been shown over and over that over training in young boys is harmful for development. On that note there are many people who try out who are huge and wonder why they didn't make it. For one its to much time spent doing football instead of studying. The units require STAMINA and the ability to push on not just physical strength. Swimming and soccer teach this flexability and spatial awareness the best.

You could encourage this by making a say German dinner one night. Say one day a week you do some different country. Nothing complicated but each week have him do a bit of research. Or just print out the page for that country from the CIA World Fact Book and discuss it.

My father was Air Force and I grew up overseas. But one day a week we would have dinner and talk about the news. Sure my dad liked to watch football and all of that but there were always books about. I saw that there was a big world out there. He always said learn and provided be with books and was willing to discuss them. When I joined the Army and became an army special forces soldier at some point I was so prepared it was not even funny. Something that even when I am 90 and sitting under my afghan reminiscing.... I will always thank my parents for it.

I think i have seen your sons Q's on here, is he a boy scout? If this is the same kid i have seen on here before than your son already has good traits on becoming a Seal. Your son needs to go to the gym so he can become strong and he should start waking up really early and go running. He will have to be very smart and it will take a lot to become a Seal but if this is the same guy i saw on here before than i think he can do it. I know a little about the military but I'm not an expert on Seals. I can tell you if your son becomes a Seal you will not have to worry about him. He can email me if he wants and you can too, i come from a military family and my brother spent some time in hell, i mean Iraq. Take him shooting and buy him a rifle he will love that and there is no time like now to become a good shot and comfortable around fire arms.

If a 13 year old is dead set on becoming a SEAL, I don't think there's anything you should have to do. Anyways you never prepare for military training. Just stay in excellent physical shape but they prefer no preperation. They want an empty canvas to teach. If he has already "prepared" then it's not teaching, now they have to change his ways. Running, swimming, weight training. Nothing else.

Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training is conducted at the Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado (San Diego, CA) and lasts 26 weeks. Assignment to BUD/S is conditional on passing the PST, which requires the following minimums:

- 500-yard swim using breast or side stroke in under 12:30
- At least 42 push-ups in 2 minutes
- At least 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes
- At least 6 pull-ups (no time limit)
- Run 1.5 miles in boots and long pants in under 11:30
- Members’ vision must be no worse than 20/200 in both eyes. Vision must be correctable to 20/20. SEAL candidates may qualify for PRK surgery to correct their vision.

Basically staying in physically good shape, but also learning new things. Seals do rely on a lot of physical attributes, but they also have to be well informed on a variety of subjects to make decisions quickly.

Concentrate on qualifying for military service first, make it thru Basic Training then Tech school before even thinking of getting into an elite Unit!!!

1. OBEY YOU WITHOUT QUESTION the first time you ask/tell him to do something.
2. RUN to school. Don't be a wuss and ride the bus or expect you to take him IN ANY KIND OF WEATHER
3 Swim, swim, swim in all kinds of water; cold, warm, salt, fresh
4. Be physically fit; no more video games, tv all night, well rested
5. No junk food.
Do a www.google.com search for SEALS and read up on them.
I hope he keeps his dream alive and allows NO ONE to step on it

Yep. he should become an endurance swimmer and be able to hold his breath for a long time. Do lots of calesthenics and stay off drugs. Thats a pretty good start.
