Your dog isn't a dumbass, he's just very comfortable with his surroundings.
He feels safe and secure, and that are no threats to him. A dog will sleep like this when they feel this way. To a dog sleeping with their belly exposed like that is a big risk, they won't do it unless they feel safe and secure.
So don't worry, just be happy to know that you are doing something that is making your dog feel that comfortable.

Actually, all of you must be awesome owners! My two dogs also sleep on their backs and while I originally thought the same as all of you, I actually read that dogs sleep on their backs because they feel very secure in their environment! So kudos to all of you!!!

If you think your dog is a dumbass you should get rid of him or her, so that he/she can have an owner who loves and appreciates him/her for being themselves.
Or as PeeWee Herman says "takes one to know one"

I have 5 pommys. They all either sleep on their backs or curled up. Which ever way they prefer to be comfortable. And another thing. They are SMART!.

Not at all, Great Danes do it too, in order to take up the whole couch, so there is no room for the humans.
