Because the PARENTS are suppost to PAY for the essentials (food, clothes, holiday gifts).

The kids pick the clothes out, and the parents pay for it. It's simple =)

Because even if you restrict them to clothes only, the little ones aren't yet capable of making good choices. I don't see anything wrong with letting them have some input, and maybe pick out an outfit or two, but they need a lot of guidance.

This can work for older kids, though. Starting when I was about 10 years old, my mom would take me clothes shopping, give me a set budget, and let me choose what I wanted. If I wanted to blow my whole budget a pair of Guess jeans (showing my age here ;-) and make do with last year's clothes for the rest, I could. But I didn't. Instead it helped me learn the value of money and turned me into a great bargain shopper.

I had a similar problem when I was 13. I wanted to cut my hair short but my mom wanted it to stay long. I told her my hair will always grow back, but I really wanted to cut it on my own, not because of friends at school. My mom said I could cut it but she won't do it, and if I make a mistake it's my mistake that i'll have to live with (she assumed i'd cut it bad). Anyway, mind your mother. All you can do is ask her respectfully. If you can give her reason to believe that you are ready then go for it. But in her eyes right now, she might see your current reasons as excuses. Ask your mother if you guys can come to a compromise. Someone mentioned earlier a dye you can wash out? That shouldn't be a problem? Tell your mom that if she doesn't like then you won't get it done permanently, but ask if you could keep it up with the temporary. If she see that you're that determined, she just may change her mind. Hope this helped.

Because they are children. A 5 year old does not know what to buy or how to spend money smartly. Teens should start picking out there clothes at around 13 not 5.

Because a parent's job is to teach young children what is appropriate to wear and what is not. Also, parents know how much money they have with which to buy clothes, and what kinds of clothing the child will need until they can afford to purchase more.

Becuase kids don't really know what they NEED to buy. And a 5 year old certainly wouldn't buy clothing!!! Candy and toys!!! And I know my daughter would pick out HIDEOUS clothing. She's only five...and has NO FASHION SENSE!!!! However I do take her along with me, when I buy her clothes. She gets to pick out a few things, and I ask what she likes. Some things I say yes, others stay on the rack!!

My parents have a picture of me as a youg boy with plaid pants and a plaid shirt. What a hoot! Kids don't make choices their parents can tolerate, so the parents buy the clothes!

Thanks for the points! Here is a blanket answer for all of your "why do you act like a parent toward your children" questions:

Children are children. They need to be taught, supervised, corrected, and taught some more. Adults are adults. Adults are responsible for their children, for all teaching, supervision, correction. End of story. A parent who does not fill this basic role is not being a responsible parent. Period. Any more lame questions?

Because most parents don't want their 5-year-old to look like a doofus, and they don't want their 12-year-old dressing like Britney Spears.
