How do the NASCAR drivers talk to their pit and crew during races? I figured it's a microphone, but does anyone know where it's positioned and how it works?

HELMETS

The microphone is inside the helmet. as you can imagine it is very noisy inside the car. the microphone is noise canceling and placed as close to the mouth as possible. when the driver pushes the talk button mounted on his steering wheel he can no longer hear the radio as he is speaking. there is also a natural tendency to try to scream over the engine because the driver can not hear himself talking under racing conditions.

the earphones are custom molded to fit inside the driver's ears. the have a cord about 1 foot long and that plugs into the side of the helmet. there is then a cord (with a plug to disconnect it) that goes from the helmet containing the mic and the earphone signals and plugs into the radio. this cord also has a place to plug in the cord from the talk button on the steering wheel. there is also a separate antenna input on the radio that goes to a small antenna outside the car or occasionally mounted on the drivers door sill.

the radios are usually the same radios that you will see the crew chief and the pit guys using only they use different headsets. radios have broken during races and have been changed out by the driver during pit stops.

it sure beats the old days when the pit guys used to hold up signs for the drivers to read as they whizzed by at close to 200mph.

Mic and earpiece inside the helmet.....same technology used by military jet pilots and such. push-to-talk button is on the steering wheel (of some humor....it's for this reason that some drivers occasionally loose power during a race...the emergency engine kill switch is also located on the steering wheel)

The mic is inside their helmets, sort of like a bluetooth. That, and the headrest above the seat.

What they all said. It's not a switch, it's a button they press on the steering wheel.
