...And nobody bats an eyelid...? Yes, this did happen to me.

Sub-questions:

Why was that so? Could they have been too busy with their own reflections in the mirrors etc. to notice? Or did I almost manage to 'blend in' (unintentionally)?

(Notes: This question is not for the rude. Decent answers are welcome.)

maybe so. when im inthe washroom, i get busy with im doing, either washing face, brushig teeth, or fixing hair that i barely notice people around me. like live and let live attitude. besides u where very quick i understand, upon realizing ur mistake u left right away. no harm. just apologize and leave.

Personally I've done it tons of times.. and all i wanted to do is use the bathroom.. some places look down on it.. some dont.. I even got booted outta one place in Nevada city once because of that and i was dressed like a girl.. i figured it would be better to use the female room.. but some chick waitress took an issue with that.. other places not a problem at all ever (Sheesh people I just wanted to pee for cats sake!) I hear this isnt a big problem in Europe where unisex bathrooms are the norm...

I think it happens on a pretty regular basis, so people just don't think twice about it. I don't know how many times I've been pre-occupied with something, not really looking where I was going until I was face to face with the little man symbol on the door. I just turn around and go through the other door. It's really not a big deal.

Yeah almost happened to me when visited Germany for 12 hour stop on cruise ship. I couldn't read the language on the door and there was no pictures. I now appreciate those pictures on the door more than I did before.

It propably happens more often than you know. For instance, I once saw 4 non-english speaking males in the Ladies room because they didn't know what the little picture on the door was all about.

Assuming you are male and entered a female bathroom.

The women who are exposed are in stalls, so there's no concern there.

You also entered, realized your mistake, and left. There's no reason for anyone to make a big deal out of it. People only scream when they feel threatened or embarrassed.

I did this... I simply turned around, walked out, looked at the sign on the door again and then found the appropriate bathroom to enter.

I think it's more of a problem if a man walks into the ladies room because then the women suddenly think he's a perv

When this has happened to me, I laugh at myself and say, "Oops."
It probably happens so often that most people just ignore it now.
