Highly intellegent dogs like Border Collies do not like to be left alone all day. They need stimulation. Hes a baby, hes getting used to you. To leave him alone for long periods of time at this point is not good. Also running back to him all the time isnt good either. Increase your activity with him when you are with him. Get started in some kind of training exercises. You need to get his brain satisfied so he doesnt get seperation anxiety. What you are describing is sounding very close like the begining of a serious Anxiety Problem.
You need to take some time and place him in his room or crate, giving him too much room at this time will cause him to think he is too alone, confine him to one room, or get him a crate. When you leave the room, and close the door, he starts barking and howling, you need to come in and harshly sush him with nothing else. Keep doing this. If he keeps it up get a can with a lid, put some screws and nails in it. Make a shaker can. instead of the Shush, shake the can when he starts. when hes been good for a given period of time, then take him out of the cage and give him love and affection and take him outside and give him a few throws of the ball. Bring him back in and try again. Making the time longer for him to be quiet. If you dont have enough time or energy to do this, the choice of a border collie X puppy was wrong for you.

Ur puppy is very young, maybe a little too young for a border collie to leave its mum. So for now you need to be mum to it, the idea someone else has given about the tape of your voice is a very good one. Maybe make a very soft bed up, with a couple of soft toys in it and place it in a very warm spot, this will hopefully be a comforting place for it.
Another VERY good thing to use is the dog pheromone spray or plug in, its called DAP and you can get in from the internet or your vet. put this in the room with the puppies bed, and where you leave the puppy alone and it will help top relax it. The pheromone is one that the mother dog releases when she is feeding her pups, and helps to calm both puppies and older dogs.
Remember with border collies it is very important to give them plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, this is especially true for young dogs. Yours is a little young to do much, but its never totoo early to start.
Hope all goes well. Border collies are lovely pets.

The thing is is border collies are VERY energetic. They need something to do during the day. I have a Aussie/Lab and i put him in a kennel during the day. I know it sounds mean cooping a puppy up like that but they feel safe in their kennels because its their "den." i just stick some chew toys in there and he sleeps all day.

You should also try taking him on long walks and playing with him at night to wear him out for the next day.

Good luck with your collie.

First, I would suggest an XL crate for your new baby. He will feel more secure if he has a house to go into. I say XL so that he can grow into it rather than having to get new ones as he grows. Come up with a command so when it's time for him to get into the crate, you can say the command and he will follow. This will take a few weeks. I always say "Get into your house!" Actually, one of my labs can tell I'm about to leave and now gets in there on her own.

Also, sleep with a blanket, stuffed animal, old t-shirt, etc so that it has your scent. Leave it with him in his crate when your gone so your scent will sooth him.

Another thing~ I don't know about the cross border collie side but on the lab side, the dogs are bred for hunting and are used to always being at the side of their person. That's why labs are always at your feet or within eyesite of you. It could be that your little guy knows you're in the garden or can see you in the garden or both and just wants to be with you. The solution may be as simple as letting him outside with you.

Hope this helps! Hang in there- labs are great dogs!!! It takes a while for them to grow up but they are awesome!!!

Aww, poor puppy. Key word...puppy. Puppies get separation anxiety...first they are taken from their litter and mom, so they are afraid they will be left again. he will grow out of it, once he sees you always come back for him. there's not really a lot you can do but wait it out. You could try giving him some playtime b4 you leave, so he'll be tired, and leaving a shirt or something with you scent on it, that may help. whatever you do, don't give in and take him with you every time he throws a fit, unless you want to deal with this for the rest of his life. Good luck :)

Yeah you have to leave him gradually he is not used to being alone he came from his mummy and a litter of pups and he has to deal with their loss and is scared when you leave him..He thinks that you are not coming back..just to break him into this take him with you as much as possible and you will have a great friend...Border collies are extremely intelligent and sensitive..

Get him a cheap wind-up alarm clock. (he'll probably chew it but it may distract him some) Also they have "puppy prozac" which is used on dogs that suffer from separation anxiety - but I'd try a less evasive route first. Maybe a kitten as a buddy.

There are a bunch of things you should know about dog training but we are going to discuss what I feel are some the most important. Keep in mind that these are only some of the things you should know. Go here http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?d5JZ

1. Repetition is the number 1 principle of dog training. Dogs just like humans learn by doing things over and over in order to get better.

2. Dog Training can and should be fun for both you and your new pet.

3. Training sessions should always be short but sweet. I never work a dog more than 15 minutes in a session to keep from losing the dog's attention. You should train you dog at least once a day but never more than three formal sessions a day.

4. Your goal should be that each training session is just a little bit better than the last one. You need to always strive to make the training better, slowly. I mention this because quite often I see people who do daily training sessions but the dog never gets better and it is not the dogs fault.

5. Having patients is very important in dog training. Losing your temper does not work with a canine it simply makes things worse.

6. Exercise is very important in the training process to get rid of all the dogs nervous energy.

7. Taking your pet for walks is very important because it develops serotonin which gives your dog a feeling of well being.

8. Always be sure to give your dog a bunch of praise in your training. It is your dog's paycheck for doing a great job.

9. Never hit your dog. I have heard people say I never hit my dog instead I roll up a magazine and swat it. It's the same thing... hitting is hitting.

10. After each training session be sure to do something that your dog will enjoy. Take it for a walk, throw the ball or maybe even rub its belly. Just do something that makes the dog look forward to the next training session.

These are things that I teach my dog training students as well as my dog training clients. I hope these things will give you something to think about when training your dog. Spend some time training your dog daily and you will both reap the benefits.

well, take my advice, i hav 3 dogs, including a puppy right now. my opinion is that you're not giving it as much as attention as u shuld b, wen a puppy is little, it needs to get used 2 u, and wen it gets 2 about a yr old, then u can start leaving it alone, but not rite now.
