My dog was acting fine and all of a sudden vomited up a bone piece from what he was gnawing on last night. The bone piece was intact with red mucus. The mucus is normal for him (but usually clear) when he vomits on occasion after he eats something he shouldn't but should I take him in to vet as it could be blood? Could he just have minimally tore something and it will heal itself? He is not acting any different than normal, no labored breathing, just laying on the floor by him like usual. Should I just watch for signs? Help! Thanks, Amanda

Thanks for all you'alls help. I called the vet and he said if it had cut the stomach it would have been black bc of stomach acid. He likely just irritated his throat and since he was able to take down water and has only had the one episode he is probably just fine.

If any of my dogs vomited up what looks like blood I'd take them to the vet just in case. Bone splinters can not only tear the esophagus lining, but can puncture the stomach and cause internal bleeding. Only the vet can determine what it is. Make sure and take what he vomited to the vets, yes this is gross, but necessary. It will help the vet to determine if it's blood or the marrow from the bone. Bone marrow also has a reddish color. Beef bones are alright to give dogs, but once they start splinter, take them away immediately. Never give chicken, turkey, or fish bones to any size dog, they are too soft and can easily splinter in their mouth. They also have a higher chance of having the esophagus or stomach torn, causing internal bleeding. When we suspect an animal of having worms, we feel their belly, if it feels distended and/or hardened, we keep an eye on that ones bowels and behavior. Well the same thing will happen with internal bleeding, the stomach has a tendency to become distended and hardened. Like I said to be on the safe side take the dog to the vet if any thing you can reassure yourself that the dog is ok. I've been known to take something as small as a dwarf hamster up to a goat to the vet for potential problems.
I hope it's nothing and you got a piece of mind.

My dog is my baby, I would take him to the vet if I saw something like that just to be sure, I would be so scared. I have a small dog, around 15 lbs, I was told not to give small dogs bones because they sliver and cause stomach and intestinal problems, I have not confirmed this with my vet yet.

Most likely he cut his throat with the bone and when he threw it up it sliced him and thats why there was blood. Keep a eye on it for the day, if its still there by the end of the day then take him to the vet.

Best to get him check out at the vet. A sharp piece of bone can cause SERIOUS damage, or, if you are lucky, just some minor irritation of the mouth and esophagus. You wont know until you have him checked. It's worth the money to get him checked now, before it becomes an emergency.

What type of bones are you giving your pets?? Never give them chicken bones,, it splinters up and they can choke to death very easily. I would take your dog to the vet,, the inside of his throat could be torn from the bones scratching it as he was chewing and swallowing them. Good luck with your dog,, hope this helps, and be sure to tell your vet what kind of bones you gave him.

Call your vet tell him what has happened. This is why you should never give dogs bones no matter what anyone tells you or what the lable on the store bones say!!!
