If I go on antidepressants will it make me gain weight? Will it make my birth control not work anymore? Will is lower my sex drive? I just want to feel better but I am worried about screwing my body up more. I have already put it through a lot with eating disorders and such. But I need to do something because I am getting crazier and more desperate every day!

For all of you who keep saying I should just take control of my life, F*** you. I am trying to take control of my life- that is why I am looking into medication.
As for you telling me I should "stop eating so goddamn much", f*** you again. I'm NOT overweight now. But I do have a history of anorexia AND bulimic symptoms and I am trying to stay well. If I gain weight then I will probably do something drastic.

I am on Serzone, after having taken Prozac, Paxil... Really like the Serzone... None of the meds made me gain weight but ask your doctor first, each individual may react to medication differently.

You sound like me except for the part about the pill. You actually have to have sex for that to be an issue. On a serious side, antidepressants don't effect the pill just your desire to have sex can be reduced. God the eating thing. I have gained 5kg in two weeks on a callorie restricted diet but also on a new antidepressant. I mean what is worse being fat and falsley happy or being thin and too sad to go out and do anything. I just can't seem to stop eating I crave food like I haven't eaten for a week. My mind is mental. I know I am depressed and without these drugs I couldn't say whether or not I would be here next week. I want to live but not as a potential contestant for the biggest loser. What antidepressants can help lose weight? Are the drug companies in it together? You go mental and you get antidepressants which make you fat and of course you then have to buy the appetite suppressant?

Ask your doctor about Lexapro and Wellbutran. I am 29 and i take Lexapro for depression and anxiety. My doc said there are side affects with any antidepressants but Lexapro and Wellbutran had the lowest side affects. Some depressants do affect sex drive, however I havent had any of those side affects. Your doc can provide a low dose of the drug and it shouldnt overpower your body but it will help you feel better, take it from someone who knows!! I have been on Lexapro for about 4 years now and I wouldnt want to go off of it. I have even taken it with birth controll and it does not affect it at all. As far as the weight goes, like I said all antidepressants have some form of side affects but that doesnt mean you will gain weight you will just have to check with your doctor, but once again you can be given low doses and it will help with all the rest and not screw your body up. Best of Luck

I used to take zoloft but experienced weight gain, profuse sweating, major cravings for carbs, I asked my doctor if there was anything else I could try; especially because of the weight gain, and now I am on lexapro. Weight has been fine, lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks and slowly going down. I have not had any loss of sex drive either!

I started taking "Sarafem" for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and they put me on 20mg to take 2 weeks before menstruation to alleviate bloating/cramps/mood swings, etc...and I ended up losing a bunch of weight (didn't mess with birth control or lower sex drive) it made me happy and symptom free....Sarafem is actually just a brand name for fluxotene which is the generic name for Prozac....so since it worked so well, I started taking 40 mg everyday and couldn't feel better!!! Talk with your Doc.
The doc told me I was losing weight because my depression lifted and I must have been a 'emotional eater'. Go figure.

Most anti-depressants will lower your sex drive.
If you are worried about gaining weight, then don't eat so damned much and be sure to exercise a lot. It's stupid to blame drugs on weight gain, because you are giving someone else the "power" to dictate your life.
If you are taking a drug that has the propensity to make you gain weight, then adjust your exercising and diet to compensate for it. Take some responsibility for your own life, because nobody else will.

I've wondered the same thing. I feel your pain...I have a dr's apt. Monday and plan on asking for an aintidepressant. I tell myself I can do it without them, but seem to be sinking lower each day. I'll be watching your question/answers to see what advise you get. Good luck to you!

antidepressants don't do anything, they treat irrelevant symptoms of depression (not the cause of it). the only therapy is cognitive therapy (talk therapy)
