Are they just looking for attention? Do they think it's "cool"? Honestly, I don't understand why people go around telling others that they burn or cut themselves. Do these people have even more psychological problems then those who aren't open about it?

if you mean why do people on here talk about cutting or burning its because its easy since its so anonymous. they can ask for help or tell stories of their struggles with out feeling insecure. but if you mean why do people tell others face to face about their problems (other than when seeking help) i do think it is for attention. i am not afraid to talk about cutting on the computer, but it is never a matter i would tell my friends

I think people who don't cut highly misunderstand the meaning behind cutting. People very VERY rarely cut just for the attention, because it's all negative attention. Nobody thinks it's cool either; most people try to hide it.

People seem to think that cutting is something only people with serious problems do, but it's not that at all. Sometimes insecurities or bad experiences just cause so much emotional pain, and people just need to get their minds off it some way, ANY way, so they resort to cutting. The saddest part about it is that it works. It gets the job done, so that's why more and more people are doing it. It's not some trend, like a lot of people think. It's something that people do to try to make themselves feel better, although it's not the right way to do it.

Sometimes people tell others about it because they know they need help. It may be hard to believe, but not everybody strives for attention 24/7. Some people actually do try to get rid of their problems, and sometimes you just need to talk about it to other people.

Absolutely. These people feel as if they are trapped in a deep, black hole with no way out. The physical pain they feel is nothing compared to the emotional/mental pain and actually alleviates the emotional pain. This is why they are harming themselves. It's almost a way to temporarily ease the suffering inside (just as some would use medications, alcohol, or drugs, or therapy) these are all just temporary alleviations to inner skeletons....they prob are looking for attention and for people to try to help them....we are only human, we all need help at some point....you've got your idea backwards, but that's okay....when people aren't open about it....well...this is what might lead to suicide....

Really I think people who go around screaming to the world that they cut themselves just want attention. I mean if someone finds out and they start telling people and then the cutter just snaps well then I don't think it's for attention. But like some of my friends think it's really cool to cut themselves. Like my friends Branden and Julia they both think that it's really cool to cut themselves so they went around saying that they cut themselves with us and gave us a bad name so now everyone thinks that we cut ourselves.

I think people are more open about self mutilation online because there's a sense of anonymity in it. Rather than talking about it face to face with someone they can do it behind their computer with people who don't know them.

Some people actually get off sexually from it. I knew a girl in the past that wanted me to cut her because it got her off when other people would cut her, but not when she did it to herself.

It happened to be that her parents would beat her and sexually abuse her as a really young girl, and she was really screwed up. She is now dead, but that was from drugs, not cutting herself.

I talk about it openly online to try to help others, but don't bring it up as a conversation topic with others face-to-face in my daily life..
