I had my tonsils out when I was 22yrs old- and suffered for over 12 years with tonsilitis- it is a bigger deal the older you are because naturally your tonsils are bigger. I was in one day had the surgery the same day I was admitted stayed the next day and out in 2 days- can't bend over your head because you can bust open a stitch and cause bleeding- and by bending over I mean your head to the level of your waist or lower- and it makes sense- the blood would cause pressure on the stitches in your throat---not much pain at all-- ice cream and popsicles are you choice of food for a day or two and healing is quick- you could go back to work within 3-4 days and everything is gone--they remove it all and honestly, that was a long time ago and I NEVER had another throat infection since.........good luck to you---it's a piece of cake and much better than suffering from your infections.

No tonsils = no tonsil stones
Quick procedure- less than an hour.
Risks include excessive bleeding and the normal risks of general anasthesia.
As an adult it is supposed to be more of a big deal. I was told to take 10 whole days off from work.
I had mine out, had only one day of really bad swallowing discomfort. Pureed cans of chunky soup for 3 days, then went to regular food. I rested for 2-3 days, then spent the rest of my time off remodeling the bathroom!

It takes about 1/2 hr in surgery. I was told not to begin working at my normal level right away, I was cleared by the doctor in 5 days to go back to work---I was a logger. If indeed they get the tonsils and the tonsil tabs, then it will be permanent. If not, you still get tonsilitis.

I had my tonsils removed when I was 30 years old. I was awake, sitting in a tall chair. It took about 15 minutes. I was given a large bowl of potato chips and told to eat them all in 24 hours and I could go home. I was fed regular food (pork chop, potatoes, green beans, apple pie) but NO DAIRY products...no milk or ice cream. Milk causes phlegm and makes you clear your throat which irritates the surgical site. The potato chips (salty) seemed to draw out the soreness and I did eat the entire bowl by the next morning. That night I fixed chop suey chow men and ate regular food. I had no problems. This was done by Dr. Milton Erdel, a throat specialist, in Frankfort, Indiana.
