Angles have wings in illustrations for the same reason that holy people have halos in illustrations, so that people who cannot read will be able to identify who the characters are. And in art pieces, where there is no written text (paintings, statuary, stained glass, etc) one can identify the characters depicted...

Aesthetic.
There are some that have wings.
Some have 6 wings each.
Only four of them though.
They are the very special.
They don't need the wings to fly.
Angels just think and they are there.
It is done in the mind.
They are not subject to physical laws.
They can move at remarkable speeds.
Literally faster than a speeding bullet. And able to leap over tall buildings in a single bound.
They can take on human form.
One thing though, they are carrying out the will of God, not free agents.

Thought you would like this.

The most common image on an angel is essentially a human being with wings. This is not Biblical. The Bible often presents angels as appearing as human beings. However, this does not indicate that angels in their essence resemble human being. Further, the Bible vary rarely describes angels as having wings. However, there are definitely two types of angels mentioned in the Bible that have wings: (1) Cherubim (Exodus 25:20; Ezekiel 10), (2) Seraphim (Isaiah 6). Cherubim and Seraphim are two types of angels, possibly the two highest orders of angels. So, this much is clear, some angels do have wings.

The Bible tells us that angels are spirit beings (Hebrews 1:14). The descriptions of the cherubim in Ezekiel chapter 10 and the seraphim in Isaiah chapter 6 are highly unusual. It is clear that Ezekiel and Isaiah were having trouble accurately describing the amazing visions they saw of Heaven and the angels. As spirit beings, it is unclear as to why the angels would require wings. A spirit being does not need wings in order to fly. The angels are not bound by the laws of the physical universe. So, do angels have wings? Yes, some angels do have wings. However, we should not limit what the angels can or cannot do based on our limited understanding of the wings angels possess as described in the Bible.

I don't think they have wings. None of our religious pictures show angles with wings. I'm putting some links at the bottom that show just some of the pictures we use in lessons, especially for little kids.
Angels are messengers from God. They don't need wings. They can do their "jobs" without the need to fly.

Because angels are man-made images, and in the human brain, anything that is going to fly should have wings.

Also, the wings do look pretty kickass.

I think it's just to symbolise flight so that us ordinary people know that what they're looking at is depicted as an 'angel'.

Moreover, in order to actually fly with their wings they would need about a 24 ft. wingspan and breastbones the size of Texas.

Because people see fire and brime-stone in hell; I assumed that this is why they think heaven is in the sky.

If you live in the sky, you would be flying like a bird.

The reason people said hell is like it is, is to control peoples behaviour and nothing more.

A ghost can float, good or evil. Gravity exerts its force on physical matter as far as I know,

Exodus 25:16-20 describes the Cherubim.

16 And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee.
17 And thou shalt make a mercy seat of pure gold: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof.
18 And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat.
19 And make one cherub on the one end, and the other cherub on the other end: even of the mercy seat shall ye make the cherubims on the two ends thereof.
20 And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be.

Isaiah 6:2-3 describes the Seraphim.

2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.
3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

Ezekiel 1:5-8 describes the four living creatures.

5 Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man.
6 And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings.
7 And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf’s foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass.
8 And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings.

Revelation 4:6-9 describes the four beasts before the throne of God.

6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.
7 And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.
8 ¶ And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,
