The way Hearns folded up always seemed kind of odd. Looked as if he'd just run about 30 sprints in a row the way he collapsed. Do you think these 2 combatants, in the era before drug testing, were on something that affected their performance? Or was Hearns ill? Take a look at Hearn's body language just before the fight.

Remember how Holiefield folded up against Bowe in the third fight? Later on we find out Evander was ill, but fought anyway.

Elmer ~
In my opinion, the only thing that was wrong with Tommy was all of the clean crisp shots he was being caught with from Hagler. There were two definite problems that Tommy had aside from Hagler blasting him, 1) Tommy got a massage by one of his entourage an hour before the fight this causes the body to relax and fatigue the muscles which are being rubbed, as soon as Tommy's trainer Emanuel Steward found out he went nuts. 2) Tommy broke his right hand late in the first by catching Hagler right on top of his shaved head. Hagler ate the best shot Herans could have thrown and just kept coming.
Haglers ability to take a shot and Tommy's decision to stand there and go toe to toe was the only reason why it looked like something was wrong with Tommy, forever the warrior he stood there and showed he can swap with the best of them as he did against Leonard, Duran and Barkley. Not a wise choice, but that's why were writing about the man twenty years after the fight.
Thanks for the question Elmer.

He got carried away landed a few good bombs then went punch crazy.
It was like Billy Conn vs Joe Louis. They both thought they could knock out the champion. They just forgot that the champion had either too much heavy artillery and could take a better shot than the punch that they could deliver.
Which is why they took the wrong option and lost. Instead of sticking with the preferred fight plan of boxing and moving. The got an brain surge and thought they could win the title by knockout instead.

The blogbaba has to tell you he has lived in the Detroit area all his life, and when Hagler beat Tommy down it wasn't what we here in Motown wanted to see.
Yeah, the beating Hagler gave him was real, and yeah, when Tommy's right hand exploded on Hagler's head, split it open and Hagler shook it off and kept coming it must have shook the HitMan's confidence. Hell it scared me to see Hagler's head split open, with blood streaming down his face, and then see him smile, it must have shook Hearns.
But the real story is why the limp noodles for legs. According to Emanual Steward some overly helpful member of the Hitman's entourage gave him a leg massage a few minutes before the fight and cost Hearns the final rounds if not a victory.
The best three rounds I have ever seen, bar none.

This is my favorite all time fight and i have watched it at least 100 times if not more and i still get goose bumps from that first round. If you analyze the first opening seconds of the first round, you'll see a determined, focused and sharp Hearns who rattled Marvin very early and knocked him back a bit, then, Marvin moved forward and landed a left and a right hand that backed Tommy into the ropes and he held on. Those punches really stunned Tommy and i don't think his head ever totally cleared after those shots and a lot of the fighting he did afterward was on instinct. He was just winging big shots and trying to keep Marvin off of him. I really didn't see anything in Hearns' body lanquage before the fight that would indicate that something was wrong with him, i think that once he saw he couldn't knock Marvin out and was really to stunned from the first round to box and move for any length of time, he had to try to gut it out and Marvin simply wore him down and finished him. One of the greatest fights ever in boxing history from two of my favorite fighters!

for my money, this one most effectively answers the question, "what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object?" both men went in there to blow each other out of the water and prove who had the bigger stones. this one could never have gone the distance and one of them had to come out feet first. once they tested each other in the first, it became obvious who had the upper hand. i can only imagine what went thru tommy head when he exploded that right off hagler and hagler kept coming back...smiling, no less! oh, yeah i don't have to imagine - it was hagler's hands in the third that went thru tommy's head! what an awesome fight! a high point for both fighters, regardless of the outcome~

elmer - Santana nailed it. That's exactly what happened before the fight and during. I read in a book that Steward said that he learned a valuable lesson from that fight. That lesson was to never leave your fighters alone with other people for a week leading up to the fight. He did, and maybe still does, room with his fighter for one week leading up to the fight.

WELL I DON'T KNOW IF HE WAS ON SOMETHING, BUT I SEEN HE WAS EXTREMELY NERVOUS(SCARED) FOR THAT FIGHT AND THE WAY HE FELL WAS FROM A VALID PUNCH. HE WAS HURT AND MAYBE TIRED, CONSIDERING HE THREW EVERYTHING INCLUDING THE KITCHEN SINK IN THE FIRST ROUND AND RAN MOST OF THE 2ND ROUND SO BY THE 3RD HE WAS TOAST. AND THAT'S ALL THAT WAS TO WHAT YOU SEEN THAT FIGHT. THAT WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO HAVE A COOL HEAD IN THE RING AND THINK AND THAT'S RAY LEONARD AND ALI WAS SO GREAT BECAUSE THEY KEPT A COOL HEAD. JUST LOOK YEARS AGO WHEN MICHAEL GRANT FOUGHT LENNOX LEWIS PERFECT EXAMPLE.
