I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit about 10 years ago. I have been believing God for the manifestation of the gift of tongues since then, asking in line with scripture. (Various, throughout the Epistles. Not going to quote them here)

However, nothing has seemed to activate. I'm still having to wrack my brain for noises to make, in an effort for the Spirit to get started praying through me.

I'm not here to discuss whether tongues is for everyone or not, but for those who do pray in tongues, how did you get started?

Read 1st Corinthians. While Paul write about speaking in tongues and the need for an interpreter he is adamant that it is not that important a gift.
You do not get started, then it would not be from the Holy Spirit.
If God wanted you to pray in tongues, and when and if He wants you to it will come unbidden.

All gifts of the Spirit is determined by the Lord who gives them. When we pray in the Spirit the Spirit does the work as we yield ourselves unto the LORD for instruction and for ministry.

The gift of tongues is given as the LORD wills. You cannot practice or prodd your way through to make it happen. If that's the gifts the LORD wants you to operate in He will increase you with that gift according to your measure of faith.

Peace,

Hope
