I have asked questions about my hair dye before.I went to the hairdressers and they said that they could'nt dye over the black as it would'nt take, and even if they stripped it,they said it would turn out quite red,not close to my natural haircolour,i want to go back to strawberry blonde,my roots are strawberry blonde, but the rest of my hair is black,i tryed to dye over it with a lighter colour but it did'nt change.I want the black to fade so it will blend in better with my hair as it grows out.Any ideas what i can do?

It's very hard to remove black hair dye from your hair completely, especially if it's permanent. Better to let it grow out and not bleach it. Bleaching with chemicals damages the hair it may make it so stretchy and thin that it comes out in your comb.
However, here are some suggestions:

Loreal Color Zap gently washes away all permanent haircolor.

Hot Oil treatments, hairspray, shampooing and exposure to water will gradually fade hair dye.

To remove the last bit of residue or stain on the hair (or to get color out immediately) make up a small batch of bleach mixture and add it to 2 tablespoons or so of shampoo in a cup and stir it up.

Wash it with Prell shampoo.

Wash it with a dandruff shampoo that has tar in it.

Wash it with shampoo mixed with baking soda.

Wash it with Dawn dish detergent.

Wash it with Tide.

OK, a couple of people have told you this cannot be done and others have said it can. Well, it can - with a professional colour stripper!!! However you need to be aware that your hair will not be in good condition afterwards (it will feel dry and certainly matted when its wet). You will need some very good conditioner and I would recommend you get a daily restructuring conditioner which is left in your hair.

Your hair will NOT go back to strawberry blonde from black! It will go orange/yellow at best. However the good thing is, is that you can colour over immediately - no waiting time. Can I suggest that you do not use a permanent colour. Try using temporary colour as this will fade out gradually. Your hairdresser could use a Quasi/Demi colour which would last longer than a temporary but will give you an obvious root growth. These options will also help to put some condition back into your hair.
Not sure how long your hair is but getting it cut shorter will definitely help you. If you are prepared to get it cut really short then don't bother with stripping. Tie or clip it up to hide some of the regrowth and try waiting for another 6-8 weeks then go get it cut.
Whatever you choose to do, make sure you go to a good hairdresser. Ask around, as recommendations are the best source.
Finally, good luck with this and PLEASE don't dye your hair black again - it's NEVER worth the bother.

I see your frustration. However, what ever you do now to get it back to strawberry blonde will not be easy, as you already have noticed. The hairdressers are actually incorrect (I used to be one, and someone doesn't know what they're talking about - or too lazy as this process will take a while). Bleach or color removal will take the black out of your hair. Color will NOT lift color, as you've already found out. So the other two options are about it. So you need a super duper high-lift bleach with 40vol. peroxide (I"d rather you see a professional do this, but it could be pretty costly, up to a $100 at least). Anyway, you can bleach that sucker right out. There are 7 levels to lightening with bleach and starting out at black you will take a good couple of hours to pull to a level light enough to get close to your strawberry blonde. You will need to get it to at least a light yellow stage. This is the 6th stage and you are starting at the #1 stage, so yes it will be difficult - but attainable. However, judging that you have roots that are strawberry blonde already and the other part too - I would really recommend getting it done professionally . Call around to other salons that specialize in this and mention all I have above. The first one sounds like the place not to go to. Why I say this? Because it is very tricky to match colors after a bleach, and to do the correct timing for bleach on the black versus the root area (which kicks out body heat and can process faster and a different color is you try to do the same). See the dilemma, very complicated. I know I could do it, but you need someone locally that gets what I mean. If it helps, print this off and take it to someone and if they disagree, walk out. People may have a hard time doing this because it's labour intensive and costly without guaranteed results. Good luck!

OK, I died my hair black for years! After sitting for over an hour with stripping bleach on my head, my hair turned to graduated layers of bleach blond, blond, starwberry blond, orange, red, brown. & black...it looked like the entire color sample book on one scalp lol! so, my stylist cut my hair into a pixie, and colored it in a shade close to my natural color. Then I could just let it grow, and do whatever I wanted to it. The pixie cut was super cute, and I've kept my hair short since. It will take time, but it is possible.
You might have to cut your hair, especially if you've been dying it black for a while. But use it as an opportunity for change, clean you house, get rid of clutter, start a new work out plan (or start working out), quit smoking, or dump negative friends/lovers...use it as a catalyst for doing the things you've been putting off Good luck!

I have my nail license and have actually had to ask this question at beauty supply for my sister. Either Prell shampoo, or regular dish washing liquid. They will strip some of the dark color out of your hair. At least fade it some. Other than that it will take some time. But that will help it not to be quite as dark. Most reputable beauty salons can also, help get it at least to a light brown/brown if you go to the right one. Good luck!

It can be stripped it will just take a long time. If you can't stand the black go ahead and have it stripped as far as it will go and then you can at least do something with it.
You could cut it short and it would grow out more "easily".
Hint: don't dye your hair black!

I dyed my hair black two years ago. I too, am a blonde. I felt your pain. What I did, is I went to my stylist, and had her strip what color she could, out of the black. Then, I had the rest of it, dyed brown. So, it looked like I had black and brown highlights throughout. It took bout 6months, between dying my hair lighter, every 6 weeks or so, to get it light enough to match my dirty-blonde color. It really damaged my hair, so, now I use all sorts of life-reviving chemicals and things. So, If you want to gradually get lighter, You could strip the color, and have it red for a while, then after a few weeks, start dying it lighter, to match your natural color. Best of luck.

You can make it fade slightly by using a shampoo like Head and Shoulders. I've also found that if I go swimming a lot, the chlorine tends to strip some of the colour too.
Hope it works out!

i dont know if this works all the time, or for all dyes. But try washing out our hair with Dawn Dish Soap. It worked for me. When your done, our going to want some conditioner, really dries up the hair, and makes it hard to style.
