How long have you had this cat? If you just adopted him away from the abusive ex-family, you need to help him get adjusted to his new environment. Keep him in a small room, like a bedroom or a bathroom, for a few days so he doesn't get overstimulated. Give him time to get used to you and your family, instead of approaching him, let him get to know you and come to you. People are really big and tall and scary to tiny little cats! You'd probably run, too, if a big giant came stomping up to you and wanted to pick you up!

Its going to take alot of time to get your cat to not run. It is because he was abused most likely, and he is prob scared that he will be abused again. Just slowly work with your cat, dont force the cat to sit on your lap or anything for a long time. My cat ran from people to, it took a few months for him to get used to everyone, we had to pet him and then hold him for a few min at a time. Just stay calm and work with the cat.

Yes, that is the reason the cat runs and hides from others.
Don't try to force kitty to do anything he doesn't want to.
Give him time, he may come around but there's always the chance that he may have trust issues with certain people all of his life.

Bless you for taking him away from the abusive situation.

He probably has quite low self-esteem and lacks confidence. Try not to make sudden movements or loud noises around him and don't stare at him - cats see this as a sign of aggression. When you look at him narrow your eyes and look away - this means you like him. Talk softly to him and stroke him as though you were licking him - like his mummy would do. His confidence will grow eventually and I am sure he will be a lovely family pet.

Miaow.

Cat's can't be accustomed to be tame unless he was able to play with a diversity of people at an early age. An abused cat will always shun strangers...

here you can find some tips on how to tame a "difficult" cat:

definitely he need time to trust you as his trust was broken for humans when he was abused by them. Just keep persevering and good on you for rescuing the helpless cat. He will learn to love you eventually when he knows you are of no harm. good luck

Poor baby!

Yes, it's likely. Another possibility is that your kitty simply is not a people-kitty. My pair are very affectionate, but they will hide when strange people or critters come in the house.

YES! Why would he think people are OK to trust if they abused. Use patience, soft voices, kindness and love to help him learn that people are OK. Don't give up! It may take time.
