Older Prom Date?

Question

I'm a pretty girl, not gorgeous, but def not ugly. I'm fit, I'm smart, I'm nice, but I don't go out an party. I'm 18 and my prom's coming up in 2 months.
I know this guy from work who's 20. I've known him for a year and he's always been nice to me and I'm not sure if he flirts with me, but sometimes I think he likes me. Other times I'm sure I'm imagining it.
What I want to know is: Should I ask him to prom as a FRIEND? He's gorgeous but he's a partier (drinks, smokes- i don't) and he might turn me down cold bc I'm not really in the same place in my life. And if I ask him, what should I say?
What would you do? Seriously? I don't want to screw things up (make things get awkward, never have him talk to me again, etc) but I don't want to miss out on this chance for an amazing night. It really would mean the world to me if he came with me. I don't know who else I'd go with.. Thanks so much for your help.

Also, he and I have been friends most of the time- talking to each other about vacations and valentine's day (alone) etc. So it wouldn't be totally awkward to go to prom with him... I just don't know if he'd mesh with my prom group (mostly nice girls and nerdy guys) but we could hang out w/ my other friends at prom...

the guy is 20 he has the same mentality that you do

if you wanna ask him and your afraid he will turn you down tell him you don't have a date and would like him to go with you as a friend,

but my opinion is who cares about a date, you can have fun with your friends and not have to worry about some stupid guy all night and if he likes you b/c your night will be ruied if y ou worry about how you look and trying not to look stupid in front of some guy. go enjoy yourself!!!!!

Find a geek in your class who doesn't already have a date and make his day by asking him to the prom.
