It is the number of man who was created on the 6th day.

REV 13:18 This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.

Man did not come up with the number.

Apostle John was given the revelation by GOD via the HolySpirit in Patmos.

The meaning of 666 is a mystery. Recently, many people speculated that there was a connection to June 6, 2006 - 06/06/06. However, in Revelation chapter 13, the number 666 identifies a person, not a date. Revelation 13:18 tells us, "This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666." Somehow, the number 666 will identify the antichrist. For centuries Bible interpreters have been trying to identify certain individuals with 666. Nothing is conclusive. That is why Revelation 13:18 says the number requires wisdom. When the antichrist is revealed (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4), it will be clear who he is and how the number 666 identifies him.

There is a great deal of symbolic imagery in the book of Revelation. Part of that imagery makes use of numbers in stressing a greater point...

For instance, the number:
"3" represents the Divine nature of God (e.g.- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).

"4" represents the earth (e.g.- the four corners of the earth: north, south, east and west.

"6" represents humans number (e.g.- Man was created on the 6th day)

"7" represents the perfection of God, often connected with creation ("4" = "world" + "3" "divine").

"8" represents a rebirth or new beginning (e.g.- 8th day circumcision, 8 people on the Ark, etc)

"10" represents a number of completion or completeness.

"12" represents the number of God's Church (those people who call on His name (e.g.- 12 tribes, 12 Apostles, etc)

Thus 777 could well illustrate the perfection of God's creation. It could be seen as the ideal that God would have for this world. As some of the above responders have stated, 6 is the number of man. 666 would be a man-made attempt to mimic the greatness of God...to usurp His power and glory. The beast identifies a person who appears to have God's power & glory (from an earthly standpoint), but it is all a sham. 666 signifies that this individual never measures up to the standard of God's perfection...indeed, they are a phoney attempt at supplanting all that God represents.

Threescore sixty and six. 3 x 1 score x 60 + 6 = 666. Or 611, some people think now. It's a reference to a Roman emperor.

because people can't ever get anything right

Hebrew letters of the alef-bet have numerical meaning and those numbers represent concepts

and there is a whole hidden meaning to words if you were to begin to add up those numbers

so it was a rather common practice to place significance on key numbers

and then along came people who didn't speak Hebrew and they heard of the concept and messed it up...and thus they began to think of the number 666 as evil

but the fact is that it isn't...and more than likely the number that was supposed to be the ooooh, scary number was more likely 616 or something

lol i just saw that on the national geographic channel. ok the reason is because one of the guys in the bible that wrote the book that states 666 was mad at a roman emporer and then he said that their was going to be a fight in armagedoen and thats like a real place close to jerusalem. and jerusalem is a city on top of 6 hills so now people are starting to think the number 666 can be refering to the city of jerusalem.

Actually, 6 is the number of man (just short of perfection, never quite making it). 666 is three times for emphasis. So it represents the maximum of the imperfection of man.
EDIT:
The remark about 999 upside down doesn't hold. Roman numerals were used at the time. Atrabic numerals were not even invented yet.

It says it's man's number, so it'd be a number that we use, not God. God said that's what it will be, but He said it's our number. So who uses 3 numbers? No one, yet.

You can play with the numbers all you want, but it would be like Plato trying to figure out what a Social Security Number was lol. Since it hasn't happened yet, anything you hear on what it means is mere speculation.

~~~Mater,,,, It has been determined that it is a Numerology reference to the Emperor Nero, coded to avoid further persecution. The "beast" is an interchangeable ref to Nero or The Roman Empire. Now reread your scripture with this knowledge.
