cut off part of the root end and a 1/2" slice off the top. put onion top side down on cutting board & slice in half through the root end. holding cut sides away from you (toward your palm) peel off skin & one layer of onion. then they are ready to slice, dice, wedge, whatever you want...

Try peeling them really fast under cold running water, as a previous respondent said. But only cut the root end at the last minute. This seems to stop the tears for some reason.
I usually cut off the top part, then run a sharp knife down the side to remove the peel and the thinnest layer of onion. Then I cut the root end, and chop or slice depending upon the recipe.
If you need to peel lots of smaller onions, like shallots or pickling onions, then blanch them first, in boiling water, and the skins will come off much easier.

If you are talking about so they won't make the tears run, keep your onions cold in the refrigerator. If you just mean to peel them, I slice them in half through the top and Root end, slice off the top end, and this makes it real easy to peel them. It's even easier if you slice off the Root end also, but if you intend to slice or dice them, it's much easier to do with the root end intact.

Cut off the stem end, leave the root end intact (that holds the onion together for later cuts). Place the onion top side down (so it's stable), cut in half. Peel the dry skin and one layer off. Place the onion cut side down again. To dice, make parallel lengthwise cuts (Fancy chefs will make wedge cuts) ALMOST to the root end, cut crosswise for your dice.

If you have loads to peel for a BBQ etc, put them into a hard bowl and just chop away with a paint stripper tool - very effective and fast. It what we used to do in our burger bar years ago

Cut off tops and bottoms, peel off thin outer skin, slice into first thick skin and peel off, revealing clean and crisp inner layers, ready for further preparation.
Don't cry if you can't get it right first time....
