I have about half a box that's turned brick hard since I last used it. I seem to vaguely recall an old fashioned method. Is it putting a slice of raw apple in with the sugar?

Put in a slice of bread. ;-)

Keeping brown sugar soft from the beginning - I store my opened brown sugar in a resealable gallon bag in the fridge. It stays soft and you don't have to wait for the bread to soften it.

In a pinch, I have also used a cheese grater when I needed soft brown sugar that had gone hard.

The link shows a disk you can buy at any store by the kitchen stuff. Put it in your sugar and it will stay soft.

When it becomes that hard the best way is to put in a microwave safe dish about 1 cup at a time heat on high for 30 seconds & stir you may have to repeat a few times. You can also put on a baking sheet in the oven at 250 for about 10-15 mins. I personally like the microwave method. Also I store mine in the freezer. You can put a sliced apple in before it becomes too hard if you keep it in the pantry. Good luck hope I helped.

Yes. Put it in the microwave for a couple of minutes. (Time varies depending on how full the box is, be carefull not to leave it too long or the molasses in it liquifies and it is again no good.) Anyway, this works really well. To prevent this from happening in the future, you can buy a little terra cotta round to keep in your brown sugar, and it will never get hard.

Yes, but a faster method is putting a slice of bread in the sugar. I have done this many times (I even did it in a large sugar bin the size of an outdoor garbage pail, in a school kitchen. It worked, with two slices that time.)

Yes a slice of apple will work, but you can soften it in the microwave too. just put a bit of water in a cup along side of your brown sugar in a different bowl and give it a try
