What is the Purpose of Having a Sponsor at your Wedding?

Question

I'm not sure if I understand the concept of having a sponsor at a wedding. What is it exactly and what do they do? Do they have to be related? Also, if they contribute to the wedding, approximately how much do they give?
I am just curious about this because I have recently attended a wedding where the bride had several sponsors, about 25 or so... and it seemed strange to me.

its when a couple is too cheap to pay for their own wedding so they ask people and places to make donations for their wedding and they advertise for them at the wedding. it looks cheesy and is really really cheap.

Traditionally, sponsors in a Filipino wedding are a group of older couples that the couple feel should be honored at their wedding. They look up to these people. They're like godparents. And they don't pay for the wedding

I believe in certain cultures sponsors help pay some of the expenses. It is usually just at weddings where there is a strong family tradition of doing that, a tradition usually brought from another country.

Having sponsors is the couple not having to pay a dime out of their own pocket. It is no one's responsibility to pay for the wedding other than the couple themselves. If they can't afford something, they either need to cut the guest list or scale back (cutting out unnecessary items/services). One thing that is considered rude by many people is that sponsors require that their business cards be on public display in exchange for the product/service being free of charge.
