My soon-to-be 8yr old son is having a birthday party.... He doesn't play with any toys and doesn't ask for anything for his birthday besides money to spend on vacation...Last year, on his invitations, he wrote "I love gift cards". Is it appropriate to write "I prefer cash gifts" on his invitations this year? Any toys he receives will never be played with.
Is there another way to word this request?

Tell them to get him gift card to places like Wal-Mart. Then you just let him cash them in to you for his spending money and that way nobodys feelings get hurt. I personally wouldnt have a problem giving an eight year old cash in a card. If he doesnt play with toys I wouldnt want to waste mmy money on something he wouldnt enjoy. I would much rather give him money or a gift card so he can take it on vacation and buy something really cool with it!!

I would just write on the invites to not bring gifts........Let your attendance be you gift. If you do get gifts that you won't use, save them or return them for $$. I save duplicate or unused gifts in a birthday box and reuse them (for out of area friends nieces nephews). It would be very rude to ask for money.

I agree with Misty. If you go to Target or Walmart tell them gift cards for there, and he can just give them to you for cash for spending money for vacation.

I don't think I would write that I prefer cash gifts - but I don't see anything wrong with him putting that he loves gift cards.

He is a kid and has to have some interests- maybe plug and play TV games or PC games or books. Ask for things he likes. sports-science experiment kits or even hand held road trip things for his vacations.
