People get confused because the bible uses two words often to express one thing this is true because of the origin of the English is Anglo-Saxon. For example duly and truly are often used together, just as joy and happiness are used together.
One unique thing about his combination is that they are duly and truly different. We have with time merged the meaning into one and the same.

Biblically, Joy is an emotion evoked by a mental state of well being, it is a continual process that goes on and have its origin in something higher than physical.

Happiness is a result of an achievement of a goal or desire. As in winning the lottery will bring happiness.

So as you can see Joy is all encompassing and finds it origin in something greater inside you so no one or situation or condition has any power over your joy. But happiness has it origin in something external to you and can be removed, revoked, revamped or taken away.
