i want to be happy but as long as i'm alive i don't think it will ever happen

I agree with you that by only showing compassion and love for others will we ever be happy even if they do not even show love in return.

i do like the Dalai Lama, a lot, especially his openness to his brand of buddhism being questioned

but i'm not sure you can do anything to be happy, it just happens. it's like meditating to be peaceful, doesn't work (for me), since then i set up a goal to be achieved or not. i just meditate. sometimes i'm peaceful, sometimes not.
