I have taught my Border Collie lots of tricks. I prefer to use a clicker and high reward human food, the technique is called shaping. The food helps motivate him to try very hard to please me. It is best to teach a trick in componants. That is to break it down to something simple and gradually shape his behavior, using the food reward to get the desired result. Luring can also be used but I try not to have to do that.

For example: I want to teach my dog to put his paw over his nose and hold it there. This is easiest to teach if your dog is laying down vs. sitting. I put him in a down and reward. He gets a taste for the reward for pleasing me. I then stick a piece of painter's tape just above his eyebrow area. I wait and as soon as he swipes his paw and touches the tape, I click and reward. Each time he swipes the paw touching his head, click and reward. As he is successful, I try to reward at the moment his paw swipes over his head and touches his nose. If his paw stops on his nose, I click and give a jackpot (a fistful of treats with a lot of praise). After he is able to stop his paw on his nose a few times, I begin to only click and reward for the paw swiping over the head and stopping on the nose. After he can do this, I then start to pair a word to it to get him to do the action on command. Now I am doing this over several days and always using the tape. Once he is able to do the trick on command, I fade the tape and we have a trick that is very entertaining. Later I might see if he can do the trick sitting up as well.

Get some books from the library. Or go on www.seefido.com or something. Then just follow their directions. Also, it might be ALOT harder if your dog is older to teach him tricks,LOL.

You should put a hula hoop and at the other end of the hula hoop you should put a little threat. Then you do that lots of times until the dog gets yous to it. You should also reward the dog.

It is repetition dogs are certures of habit. I don't know if you have heard of that scientist person who only let his dogs eat if they heard a bell. It is no different w/ tricks.

The best way is to catch the dog doing what you want him to do, assign a word to it, and treat him.

For example, if you want the dog to bark (or not bark!) he needs to know a word. BARK. When he barks say "Speak!" or "Bark!" then treat him. Then when you want him to bark and say that word, he will do it.

Same with play dead. I taught my dog to play dead by rubbing his tummy. Every time he sat by me, I would rub his tummy and say "Play dead!" every single time. soon, he would come over, I would hold my hand over him and say PLAY DEAD and he would just lie on his back.

You can make things funnier by saying "Bang!" rather than play dead...see how cute that could be?

You have to teach them, repeat it time and time again, and reward them with a treat and praise them when they do it correctly. After a while, they will do it willingly.
