I guess it means that he's realistically and isn't crazy enought to think that your relationship will be forever. Basically he's saying that he doesn't have a large enough connection to u to start changing things about himself for u. Why should he. Take it or leave it basically.

first off, if you don't agree with him on smoking, you shouldn't be going out with him. It's bad for his health. It could hurt your health too. Tell him that you really like him, but smoking isn't going to get him anywhere. Including you or life.
