First off, try not to worry or be nervous. I know that seems hard not to, but the more you worry and the more nervous you are, the scarier it'll be. I believe that knowledge is key, and once you know the procedure it'll be a lot less scarier for you.

Make sure you get to the airport with plenty of time to check in, go through security, and fine your concourse and gate. Rule of thumb is to allow yourself 2-5 hours before your flight. Call the airport ahead of schedule to see what their wait time is for that specific day.

Make sure you have all your documents with you (picture ID or passport, visa if needed, and ticket). Also make sure that you are not taking any forbidden items with you. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

Now you are ready for your flight!

When you taxi, you barely feel the plane move at all. At this point the cabin crew will tell you all you need to know about what to do in case of emergencies and such.

When the plane prepares for liftoff, it starts to go really fast down the runway, and then within 45 seconds you are up in the air. Things may seem a little wobbly at first, but that's just because of moving through the different altitudes. Your ears will pop as you climb through the altitudes also. (chewing gum, drinking something, swallowing, or yawning will alleviate the pressure.)

Once you are in the air, things will feel smooth. You will hear the humm of the engines, but that's normal, nothing to worry about. I actually find it relaxing. If there is turbulence, you might feel the plane wobble a little bit, but remember, planes are designed to withstand this, so take a deep breath and try not to think about it.

When you are approaching landing, your ears will pop as you descend through the altitudes (remember: chewing gum, drinking something, swallowing, or yawning will alleviate the pressure). You will feel the plane slow down and the cabin crew will prepare you for landing. When the plane touches down it kind of feels like a short jolt, and then you hear them cut the engines off and the plane slows down pretty fast.

From there, the plane will taxi to either the gate or the designation where a bus will pick you up. You wait for the plane to decompressurize a few moments before they start letting the passengers out. That was your flight.

To entertain yourself:
- Bring along a few book, magazines, puzzles (such as crosswords or Sodoku if you like those).
- Bring along an iPod, MP3 player, or CD player to listen to music.
- A laptop is good to have as you can play games on it, connect to the internet, and get any work done that you may have.
- Try talking to the people next to you. Sometime you will meet some really interesting people, and forge friendships.

I also have a fear of heights and flying used to be terrifying for me, but you can not let some fear stop you from enjoying life. I now fly without any fear whatsoever and you can also if you just face your fear. The more you fly the less scary it will become, so I say just go without even thinking about it. The more you think about it the less willing you will be to go. Once you face this fear you will be able to enjoy life and have fun with your husband. Also, you do not want to take any pills, since that will only make your perception on flying all the worse. Good luck to you and I hope you have fun in Florida!

The more you know rule might help.
I was the same on my first flight, I did not know what was going to happen if anything, but i'm pleased to say it just like driving, you get in and watch the world go by. I know it seems simple. If you are really worried then find out about flying and travelling, were are you going, what's the weather like this time of year, how many people go there each year, how far is it, what sort of plain are you going on, what's the in flight movie? the more you know the less you can fear.

I had a massive fear of flying, I got to 48 before I would get on a plane and only did it then because we had to get to Dublin really quickly, a friend had had a serious accident and was very ill, but I honestly do not know why I was so scared, by the time you get on the plane, settle yourself down, have a nosey at who else is on the plane, listen to the air stewards give their pep talk your on your way, I feel I have missed out on so much by not getting on a plane earlier, don't wait until my age to do it, go now and make the most of it, its good fun and nothing like people say it is, go for it and enjoy yourself.

The standard answer to your question is, "You are more apt to have an accident on the way to the airport than to crash in an airplane by better than 27:1"

With that said, today there is more concern about someone hijacking the airplane that you happen to be in. It is more difficult to board an airplane now because of the many inspections before you are allowed on the concourse. This gives someone a somewhat better feeling about the passengers in that aircraft.

Aircraft are engineered to fly and they do it well. Mechanical failures that cause an aircraft to crash are very rare; but yes they do happen. You are very safe in an aircraft, much more than driving a car.

Remember that there are more accidents on the road. The pilots
are well trained, have regular medicals and are very conscious of people who might worry about flying,The on-board staff are
kind and careing ,tell them of your fear and they will keep an aye on you.Fly and enjoy the wonderful feeling of being above the clouds.

Change from fear of flying to fear of crashing.I look at it this way there is a professional person/s at he front driving it he/they want to get there in safety as much as anyone else,And if the plane crashes they cop it first.

I used to be afraid of flying too.

The way I got over it was to have several stiff drinks in the departure lounge bar just before getting on the plane.

Sorted!
