I think you ask that question because you want to get
an impression of all the nationalities
which are asking and answering on Yahoo.

That's a good idea, and I gladly contribute to that :
I'm Dutch, not as in 'Dutch treat' (boo!) but as in 'Dutch Cheese'
(yummy!).

Arrivederci!

My native language is Spanish. I hope you can get an accurate measure thru your survey. What is it? You want to know which is the most spoken language, besides English, here in Yahoo Answers? Let me tell you you'd have to go to the other language sections and make the same question, otherwise you'll only have a sample of the people who visit the English language sections and speak more than one language be they native of foreign.

I think 'native language' is an unfortunate term as no one speaks any language at birth. Sadly, alternatives such as 'first language' and 'mother tongue' are not much better, as there are many people who are more proficient in a language they learned after their first or from someone other than their mother (e.g., missionary children who pick up the local language before their parents' language or multicultural children who grow up in an environment where their mother's language is not widely spoken). I only want to point out the rich complexity of the question. In short, what do you really want to know? My dominant language (i.e., the one I use by default to process my daily thoughts) is English, but I also have varying levels of proficiency in several other languages.

I grew up bilingual. My family speaks Korean, but my brother, who was already attending school while I was a baby, spoke English fairly well, and I spent most of my time with him. But since I too started to attend school, my English is now better than my Korean.

I also speak Spanish, American Sign Langauge, Japanese, and very little French.
