Shes getting them right at about 80%, she will read the letters off of our tee shirts, ect..Is this normal? My 4 year old is only getting about 20% of them right, but she has always seemed a little behind her peers. How old do kids usually start recognizing letters on paper and telling you what letter it is?

Sounds about normal to me, my nephew was 2 and he could recognize numbers and the alphabet, at 2 1/2 he could spell his name. It all depends on how much time mommy and daddy spend teaching them. My cousins baby was just over a year and singing the alphabet. Its good that your teaching her, helps her in school.

many times what happens is the youngest selections up what you're coaching the older one. The youthful ones tend to pay extra interest whilst some time is with the different one so as that they could be in touch and not experience disregarded. each and every baby develops on there very own time and that i'd say best for you if she is getting that many ceremony.

At that age, 20 months, its letter memorization not recognition. The difference is if you ask your child what letter does apple start with, she'll have no idea. She can't comprehend what letters mean, and how they are used in spelling. They usually don't start actual recognition until 4 or 5 years.

Congratulations on your gifted child. It is more than normal; she is talented! As for your other child, I don't think she is behind...when my sister was four years old she only got about 15-20 percent of the letters right, but she learned and now she is not at all behind.

Well, my son is 19 months old, and he can count to two. If he's watching, say, seaseme street, and they're going through the alphabet, he'll repeat what they say. And ppl say he's pretty advanced for doing that. So, I would say she's advanced. I would say just encourage her. Some kids pick up language quicker than others, and some kids pick up physical things (e.g. walking, and such) quicker. Congrats, though. I'd be very proud.

don't worry. kids learn at their own pace, so some are slower and some faster. some enter kindergarten not knowing letters, but do fine with their schoolwork. use this link or go to the library for books on how chidlren develop and at what rate.

Umm, well, looks like you have one genius and one kid who isn't trying to learn whatsoever. Can read 20% at 4? Damn. Are you even putting them in a school?

Don't complain. My daughter is 3 and she only gets it about half right, though she can count to 20. Every child discovers their strengths....enjoy it.

That's good... It shows that the child isn t watching those stupid brain cell killing cartoons on Cartoon Network or those "educational" shows that s dumbing down the kids... Your other child will catch on , just work with her more .
