You can leave a fork or spoon in the liquid you are heating all day, no problem.
But don't put in anything that has a hole in metal, like the metallic ring on china.
You can even take food in aluminum, opening the top to expose the food.
In fact leaving a teaspoon in a cup of liquid you are heating will keep it from boiling over as readily as it might without.

Ben Franklin was the first to show that lightning hits the point of a piece of metal and not the other parts. The next day he invented the lightning rod.
Microwave ovens have metals, but hey do not have any points sticking out. This is where the sparks fly.

It has a return path to ground to dissipate any energy that collects on it. If you could connect that fork you accidentally put in there to the same ground, you could leave it in the oven all day.
