It does not cost you anything if you use the normal "free" version of YMJ.

There are 4 things that do cost money on Yahoo Music. All are optional, and you will be clearly notified if you stumble onto a paid section of the product.

#1- The "Plus" ("upgrade") version of the YMJ player. (This does not include the "new version" notices you get from time to time when you use YMJ. Those are free.)

#2- A subscription to Yahoo Music Unlimited, with or without the "To Go" feature.

#3- A stand-alone subscription to Launchcast Plus. Note that a YMU subscription includes Launchcast Plus, but you can buy Launchcast Plus without subscribing to YMU.

#4- Individual tracks you purchase yourself for download.
