Buy a copy of the magazine TimeOut New York; it will tell you exactly what exhibits are at which museum, which designer boutiques are having sales, the plays, the concerts, the events for the week. This will help you plan your vacation.
I think the best hotel in Times Square, for the price is The Belvedere on 48th Street. The bus and subway are on the corner. Every room has a coffee maker, microwave and fridge (you can take your restaurant leftovers back to your room). It's very, very clean with a very friendly staff and rooms start at $160
you may be able to negotiate a better price at Orbitz or PriceLine. Whichever hotel you decide on, be sure to read what the previous guests think of it and if they would stay at that hotel again.

The East Village has lots of little shops/independant designer boutiques. Try Tokio 7 at 64 East 7th Street at First Avenue - it's a designer consignment shop. It can get very crowded, but you can find things here you won't see anywhere else. If you like Denim, look at Famous Friends at 616 East 9th Street (between Avenues B and C)
Walk through Soho - wonderful clothing stores.
Have a great time - you can't do it all, so just plan to come back again.

Im going to NYC in March (15-19) also! This is what I did:
For a place to stay go to craigslist.com, look under vacation rentals. Im renting someones apartment right outside of times square for 150.00 a night. The whole thing, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, living room, halls and all! The thing about NY ive learned is you can get a room cheap. 60-150 but your gonna have to share a bathroom at least and dont expect much unless you go over 150. No where else in the US will you pay 150 bucks for a hotel and have to share a bathroom. Its crazy....
I bought broadway tickets to Phantom of the Opera on ebay for half the price of everywhere else. They were shipped quickly and I compared a seating chart and they look to be pretty good.
Ive already been to the empire state building. It was a long line to get on top of the building and freeze your butt off.
DONT DO THOSE DOUBLE DECKER TOURS FOR MORE THAN HALF A DAY!!! Man those things suck! Youll spend your whole day on a bus. And SOOO cold! Im from the South but geesh its cold there. Those things are slow and boring.
I heard SOHO was the best place to shop. I got some really intresting and unique stuff in China town. I never had a problem with anyone taking my debit card.
I also felt safer in NYC that I did in my home town. HAVE FUN!

I recently went to New York last Friday and we stayed in the Edison Towers Hotel which is right in the heart of Broadway and if you walk down the street you are in Times Square, it was really cool. It was also my first time going and I loved it! The best thing I did was going to the top of The Empire State Building! It was so incredib being able to see the entire city and the land that surrounds it! I also went to see Hairspray the Musical and it was so amazing it is a definite must! Another good thing to do is see Wicked the Musical. You can go to the box office and put your name in a drawing to get tickets on the front row for only twenty-five dollars which for a Broadway Musical is exactly like getting it free! But if you are going with a group you probably don't want to put the names in because one might get it and the others probably won't but if you are willing to pay as much as three hundred dollars for one ticket... knock yourself out because to me it is WORTH IT!! I have seen the musical on the internet and I loved it so much I got the CD and I want to get tickets two years ahead of time because that is how long you have to wait to go on regular price! Also a cool thing to do is a tour of the city! Oh yeah and also in The Edison Hotel's Cafe is wear part of the movie the Godfather was filmed! Staying there in the middle of every thing was really cool! I loved New York so much I want to go back and I hope I move there one day! Hope this helps some!!

Fifth Avenue extends northward from the northern edge of Washington Square Park through Greenwich Village, Midtown, the Upper East Side, and Harlem, where it terminates at the Harlem River at 142nd Street.
Between 57th Street and 85th Street, Madison Avenue is identified as “the fashionable road”. In this area is where most of the very well known fashion designers and upper class hair salons are located
You won't have enough time for everything I listed but have a blast its a great place to visit!!!

The best show that you will ever see is Mamma Mia at the Winter Garden Theater. Don't miss it....................you will get chills. It's based on the songs of the band ABBA; a really great story, and the music is phenomenal!! You will come out of the theater in complete awe. There is also an online website on which you can buy broadway tickets!! Good idea to buy them ahead of time..............also don't miss South Street Seaport (great restaurants & shopping) Have a great trip!! Hope this helps!

Le Souk - Hookah Bar/Northern African Restaurant/Disco - Avenue B between 3rd and 4th st.
Zabar's - Fantastic Deli/Grocery - 80th st. and Broadway - www.zabars.com
Joe's Shanghai - Dim Sum, Soup Dumplings - Chinatown - Pell st. between Mott and Bowery
Lit - Great Dive Bar, check out the basement too - 2nd avenue between 5th and 6th st.
Rodeo Bar - Restaurant/Live Music, try the
pomegranite margarita and some Texas BBQ - 3rd avenue and 27th st. - www.rodeobar.com

To maximize your New York experience, first, you have to get mugged on a subway. This is getting harder to do, because according to NYPD statistics, violent crime is going down. (Actually, it is, but the NYPD only counts multiple chainsaw murders as "violent crime", and catagorize everything else as "property crime"). But make sure you carry a shiv with you, to save time, because our next stop is Long Island, because you can't consider yourself a real New Yorker, until you've disposed of a body. Unfortunately, the Disneyfication of Times Sqaure has ended the tradition of getting peed on by a homeless person in Times Square while you argue prices with a tranny hooker, so just find an authentic kosher pizza parlor in Harlem, and your experience wil be complete!
