instead of retreating backwards from punches you can step around to their side - it puts you in a very strong position actually.

Any martial artist would easily be able to avoid getting themselves into that situation to begin with!

Philosophically speaking -- there are two different basic points of view.

1. A corner is desirable because it offers a limited field of attack and is thus most readily defensible.

2. A corner is undesirable because it does not leave you with a means of retreat should the attacking force be overwhelming.

re: Doing a sweep - If you are in a corner you are not able to move out of the way!

My sweeping techniques are always done with my weapon i.e.; a cane. There are several techniques that are of little interest to anybody who does not use the cane as a weapon.

Bob and weave, counter punch, clinch, throw knees, STOP BACKING UP.

If your getting cornered by punchs backing up with only make it worse. What that guy said about only coming in from one direction is horribly wrong. Being cornered means you can't move to avoid your opponent's attacks. They can move left and right working angles and finding holes. You need to MOVE FORWARD and become the aggressor. Stay in the pocket and find a counterpunch, then YOU move forward.

Moving back has got to be the worst idea. You let them develope their full power, maybe as you are trying to cradle your head, they will throw some roundhouses to the body or head. Move forward and that same person can't throw those long punches and kicks, they have short lil hooks that don't do nearly as much damage.

You need to circle out. When they move forward you circle to the right or left. Example: If they are coming at you throwing a left hand punch circle to the right and throw a right cross to their face.

To do a sweep, grab the kicking leg. To take steam off the kick move in as they kick. It becomes less effective if you are in tight.

If this person has cornerd you and is continuosly punching you, just use a bit of common sense, foot sweep them-normaly if someone has cornerd you they usually have one leg infront of the other while doing their thing in the corner, so you first have to sweep your foot so it is behind the ankle of his foot then all you have to do is continue the sweep in the same direction inorder to lift his foot of the floor, that way, he is now off-balance so you can now move your arm in front of him and push or slam him to the ground.

You can just start kicking violently at your attackers shins, and if the are any objects around use them as weapons to take your attacker out.

Regarding the sweep technique you are right on the above also you can off balance your attacker by palm thrusting him (one example) and sweep his leg or both of them to drop him to the ground.

keep your hands up fist and foremost, if you are back into the corner move your head side to side(bob and weave)move really hard and fast straight to their weak side usually their left side, throw a really hard and fast left hook remember keep it close to your body for more power and less chance not to hurt your shoulder.then turn and hit them into the corner if you wish or get them in the middle of ring. then throw straight jabs or front kicks to getthem to stay out side.
second question they are 100's of ways to sweep my fav way is to face opp step forward with my right leg behind their right leg and throw a really hard ridge hand to the upper body(chest, head)
while still pushing all my weight and power forward. really a take down unless you hold on then it becomes a sweep (because of you still maintain control.

If someone is throwing contiuous punches at you don't move straight back, you'll still be on the receiving end of his punches. Rather angle out (about 45 degrees) preferably to the outside of his body where you have a menu of targets to choose from, and he is vulnerable.

When you are in a corner you are at an avantage because they can only attack you from one direction. To do a sweep, drop down in to a crouch while spining counter clockwise with your left leg out (this is illegal contact in a sparring match).

TO sweep with result, sweep the leg on which they balance. Oh, and if you are a grappling type, duck under the punches and clench their legs and toss them.
