I suggest "Feeling Good" by David Burns, in addition there is a workbook to go with it entitled "10 Days to self-esteem" also by David Burns.
Also, "You Mean I Don't Have to Feel This Way?" by Colette Dowling is a great book.
I also think "CoDependent No More" by Melody Beattie is great if you have codependency issues connected with your depression, whether they involve substance abuse or relationships (which were my issues). You can go to Amazon.com to find many of these books at lower prices and they often will recommend other books with similar topics. Good luck.

There is an excellent book on the topic of depression. It's not really a self-help book, because depression is a complex illness and sometimes you can't help yourself without the help of a doctor. There are so many medications out there to help you. If you have been depressed for more than two weeks, please, I urge you to go see a physician and get professional advice. Why suffer needlessly. The name of the book is "Up From Depression", by Leonard Cammer, M.D. Good Luck.

well, I've been diagnosed with 5 things since i was about 9 and I'm 24 now (asthma, depression, pcos, cfs and the occasional bouts of insomnia).the meds that I've taken were just for my asthma (and continue to take them) and used to take meds for depression. (i have nothing against anti-depressants as long as the diagnosis is right and the right medication is prescribed....it may take some time for the 'right' medication to be found). I used to take Zoloft before there was that warning for patients under 18. while taking Zoloft, it was like I was a robot. i did everything the same as i always did, but i never really "had" emotions....i did get angry, i did get happy (etc) but it wasn't like before the meds. i eventually got off the med like 5 years ago. i still have depression, but there are ways that i handle it. how i handle depression is different how some one else does. if i get 'depressed' (no pun intended), i do an activity that i enjoy doing...like riding my bike, driving my car, hanging with family and friends, watching a movie, reading a book....i also journal!
if you want to read self help books, do it! BUT talk to your doc to see what else they may suggest.....
