I have never tried to make a balloon arch. From what I read, I need to make symetrical bunches of balloon clusters. How do you attach the balloons to the arch (I will need to use PVC)? How should I anchor the arch to the floor? Any other suggestions?

Basic Steps for Building Arch Designs

STEP 1: BALLOON INFLATION & SIZING

Using either a standard tank (helium or air) and inflation combination, or a tank with an automatic sizing nozzle, over-inflate the balloon to a diameter slightly greater than its recommended size. Then, using the Sizing Template (see instructions below), let air out of the balloon slowly until it just passes through the pre-measured template opening. (Over-inflating and downsizing the balloon in this manner makes it more pliable and easier to handle during arch construction.)

MAKING A SIZE TEMPLATE

To achieve a uniform size for every balloon in the arch, a Sizing Template is required. Simply cut a square or circle to the desired balloon diameter in foamcore, cardboard or other semi-rigid construction material. Clamp to the edge of a table for easy use.

STEP 2: CREATING BALLOON CLUSTERS

After inflating and sizing two balloons, twist together at necks and tie together. Do the same with another pair of balloons. Twist both pairs together at necks (about three twists) to make a four-balloon cluster. Similar techniques can be used to create clusters of up to five balloons, which, in turn, will be attached to monofilament to create various arch designs.

STEP 3: ASSEMBLING ARCHES

Stretch monofilament line (nylon fishing line) securely between two points so that it is about waist high. (For indoor decorations, we recommend 50-lb. monofilament, and outdoor designs should be made with 100-lb. monofilament.) Mount balloon cluster onto line by making a space between two side-by-side balloons and setting the cluster in place. NOTE: To make assembly easier, mount the first cluster against a flat surface, such as a large piece of cardboard attached to the line, so that the subsequent cluster will "nest" easily into it. When placing following clusters on the line, do not slide balloon clusters along the line as balloons may tear slightly, causing leakage or breakage. Pay special attention to the position of each cluster mounted onto line, as this is how patterns are created.
