I just bought a radio for my car and I also bought a dash install kit just in case I needed it. What is it for and what problem would I run into where I might need the dash install kit?

a dash kit just holds the radio in better basically.you will need the dash kit in most cases. like if you have a double din dash you would use it to converrt it to a single din. and some times the radio manufacturers will have a new radio with a little bit of space that you could see into your dash thats aother reason you should use the dash kit.
